Slice Me Some Pie – The Anti Lockett
Before the season started, I had a series of articles called ‘Slice me some pie’ it was all about single players I wanted a slice of in my fantasy teams. When Rob and I discussed this series coming back I automatically had one guy in mind. The Anti Lockett, D.K. Metcalf.
I’m bringing it back mid-season to see if my feelings for these players are still true or if I fancy a slice of someone else. I will be looking at players I like and want in my fantasy teams that have the potential to help out for the rest of the season. Some of it will be down to my personal preference but I will throw in some stat-based reasons too to back me up.
D.K Metcalf – WR – Seattle Seahawks
He was in my first set of ‘slice me some pie’ and my feelings on him have not changed. He’s big, fast, another year wiser and already showing a great connection with Wilson.
After his rookie season, Seahawks offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, said he was looking to expand Metcalf’s versatility in the passing game in 2020. Well, guess what Rush Nation, Schottenheimer didn’t lie.
Why D.K over Lockett
Don’t get me wrong, I love Lockett and would happily have him in my team. This, however, is ‘slice me some pie’ and I enjoy watching DK play a little more than Lockett.
Mind you, a few stats won’t hurt to help me explain why I enjoy DK a little more. 5 games in and he’s just shy of the 500 yards mark. 496 to be precise. That’s from 39 targets and 22 catches. Right now he’s on pace to get 1500 yards and 16 TDs.
There is almost a 50/50 split for targets with Lockett but DK has done more with his receptions. Lockett has been targeted 38 times with 30 catches and he’s turned that into 342 yards and 4 TDs.
The big draw for me is DK’s ability to get downfield and get that huge pass from Wilson. His yards before the catch is huge. Right now he’s averaging 17.1 yards before he catches the ball. He also has a nice average of 5.4 yards after the catch.
Lockett right now is benefiting from the shorter throws, averaging 8 yards before the catch but as soon as he has caught it, he’s only averaging 3.4 yards.
Mr 5 game consistent
I know it’s only been 5 games but right now Metcalf has been the more reliable WR in the Seahawks offence. In every game played, he hasn’t had a game where he’s had under 90 receiving yards. He’s also scored a TD or more in 4 of the 5 games.
Compare that to Lockett where he’s only picked up 2 games over 90 yards. One of those games he managed 100 yards with 3 TD’s but the last two games he’s only managed 39 and 44 yards total with no receiving TD’s.
All in all, if you have Lockett you are still going to be pleased. But for me, it’s all about DK!
