Step Up Sophomore – 2022 Sophomore Quarterbacks

Step up sophomore

After starting with the Wide Receiver and Running Back position, I now move onto three 2022 Sophomore Quarterbacks.

A player’s sophomore season can be a boom or bust season. Get it right and the player is more likely to stick around after their second season and consequently stick around in the league.

In this series, I look at 3 players who have just finished their rookie season and will be looking to do just that, step up.

In the systems they are in, stepping up is what’s needed. Knowing this could help you find some fantasy help in your drafts or at least some sleepers to keep an eye on.

Trevor Lawrence – Jacksonville Jaguars

2021 was an odd season for Lawrence. The number 1 overall pick in the 2021 rookie draft was meant to change things for the better in Jacksonville. Unfortunately things didn’t go quite to plan.

The main reason it didn’t go to plan was because of the dreadful Human that was the head coach at the time, Urban Meyer. The Jaguars saw the error of their ways in week 13 and made the change.

Lawrence had the odd game where he showed us the talent he’s potentially capable of. Unfortunately the team was poisoned by Meyer from the off and didn’t give us a true reflection of what could be for the Jaguars and Lawrence.

2022 and beyond

Looking forward, there is a lot to be excited about for Lawrence. First off, he has a new Coach. A superbowl winning coach in Doug Pederson. In the 5 years he was coach for the Eagles, they had 4 seasons in the top 10 for pass attempts.

With a more grounded coaching set up around Lawrence and some key players coming back from injury, the more stable environment will hopefully set Lawrence up for his ability to shine and show us what he is capable of.

The anticipated return of Running Back Travis Etienne should also help Lawrence going forward. With a strong running game, the opponent has to focus on the run more which in turn opens up the passing game. The Jags look to have upgraded their O-Line in the off-season which should help both Lawrence and Etienne too.

There will be a lot of pressure to get this season right. If Lawrence can show us why he was picked Number 1 overall then the Jaguars will be in a much better position this season.

This also means that Lawrence is makings waves in fantasy football which is why he’s one of my 2022 Sophomore Quarterbacks that needs to step up.

Justin Fields – Chicago Bears

The Justin Fields experience was meant to be a big thing for Chicago and for fantasy football alike. Unfortunately the experience was sketchy at best and the Bears fans and fantasy football players alike will be hoping for a massive improvement.

The rookie season had times where the potential was starting to shine through and the odd game where fantasy points were starting to stack up both in the passing game and Fields’ running game.

Fields played in 12 games and started in 10 attempting 270 passes and completing 159. The rookie racked up 1870 passing yards as well as rushing 22 times for 420 yards and getting a total of 7 passing TDs and 2 Rushing TDs.

After spending his rookie season as a back up to Andy Dalton, it’s now time for Fields to step up in this Bears offence. Fields now looks to be the starting Quarterback and will need to insert himself into that leading role and take charge of the team.

One thing that gives Fields the potential this season is the Sophomore will be needed a lot more often than not. This off-season hasn’t been as productive for the Bears in terms of picking up better offensive players.

With that, the Bears may be coming from behind a lot during this season. Meaning they may rely on Fields to throw a lot more or he could be using his feet to scamper away from the pressure. This is a negative in the real world game but great for fantasy football.

Due to this, Fields has all the potential to be one of the three 2022 sophomore Quarterbacks that could step up for your fantasy team.

Zach Wilson – New York Jets

Wilson had a mixed rookie season. The rookie Quarterback started the season and played in the first 6 games. Wilson was then out for 4 games but then managed to finish the season starting the final 7 games.

In those 13 games, Wilson had 213 completions for 2334 yards whilst only picking up 9 passing TD’s. Wilson also had 185 rushing yards getting another 4 TD’s.

The first 6 games of the season were definitely rusty for the rookie quarterback. 9 of the 11 interceptions for the season came in the first 5 games. Wilson only threw 2 interceptions in the final 7 games of the season. That including 0 interceptions In the final 5 games. showing some good progress late on

Heading into 2022

This is where Zach Wilson becomes one of the 2022 Sophomore Quarterbacks that have a great opportunity to step up.

The Jets already have promising players in sophomore Wide Receiver Elijah Moore and Running Back Michael Carter. Joining them will be potential star and Rookies, Running Back Breece Hall and Wide Receiver Garrett Wilson. Both slated to be stars in the NFL.

The Jets also bolstered their offensive line in the off-season, Including signing tackle Laken Tomlinson. Hopefully this gives the Sophomore Quarterback a better chance of settling the offence and starting to produce good fantasy numbers.

There you have it, 3 sophomore Quarterbacks that need to step up in 2022. If you missed out on the rest of the Step up Sophomore series, you can check them out here Running Backs, Wide Receivers.

Until next time Rush nation,

Keep Rushing.
