The Alvin Kamara Fantasy Conundrum
This new series looks at players who present head-scratching scenarios for fantasy drafters. The first in the sequence looks at Running Back Alvin Kamara.
Kamara’s Fantasy Worth
With the 2022 NFL season is officially a month away, this means fantasy football is also round the corner. Many drafts have already taken place, with many more to come prior to the beginning of the campaign. Whether it is a redraft or keeper league, Running Backs and Wide Receivers are seen as the biggest priority positions in any person’s team.
Kamara has always been a fantasy must have. This is due to his ability both on the ground and in the receiving game. Over the course of his five-year career, he has run for 47 rushing touchdowns, 4,238 rushing yards. As well as that, he has recorded 3,268 receiving yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. As a result, Kamara is a regular first round fantasy selection.
But this offseason provides a different predicament, one that is giving many fantasy owners a headache.
Why is Kamara’s Fantasy Worth in Question?
The New Orleans Saints’ Running Back is facing charges for misdemeanour and felony battery. This after an incident in Las Vegas during the weekend of the Pro Bowl in February. ESPN’s Katherine Terrell reported that the former Tennessee Volunteer will learn his fate on September 29th. It is until this hearing is given out, that we will know what the NFL intends to do with Kamara’s league punishment.
We have seen the fallout from the Deshaun Watson legal case and the six-game punishment that it is recommended he misses. It begs the question as to what punishment Kamara could face.
This is why it is so hard to know what to do when Kamara is still on the board.
Lack of injuries
Of course, there is always the concern of a drop off with Kamara due to injuries. This is something we have seen in the years gone by with the likes of Todd Gurley, Christian McCaffrey, and Saquon Barkley.
However, Kamara has stood the test of time. He has refrained from being the workhorse back that Gurley was, something that ultimately affected his career longevity. This is also the worry for Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry.
Where Should You Take Him In Fantasy?
It is unlikely that any fantasy owner (besides the novice) would take Kamara in the first, second or even third round. This is especially so in redraft leagues, with the Saints’ lead back likely to not even be taken until the final few rounds due to the uncertainty. If you are reading this and he is still available late on, then it is advised to take him then as he may become a key part of a late season push for your fantasy playoffs.
However, the predicament is that much harder for dynasty leagues. I would advise taking him in the third or fourth round. He may be a doubt for this season in terms of how many games he will play, but he will be a player that will get you points galore over the years go by.
