Trade! Deshaun Watson Traded to the Cleveland Browns!
The blockbuster trades continue to roll in this offseason. We started with Russell Wilson, then standards then dropped down with Wentz. Now, they have peaked again with Davante Adams heading to Vegas, as well as Watson, who is using his no trade clause and has decided to head to the Cleveland Browns. Watson has, in my honest opinion, picked the best team of the 4 that were reported to be all in for him. From the Browns, Saints, Falcons and Panthers, he has picked the best team to make a push for the playoffs and win.
The Trade
Cleveland Browns receive Deshaun Watson and a 2024 6th round pick
Houston Texans receive three 1st round picks (2022, 2023, 2024), one 3rd round pick (2023) and two 4th round picks (2022, 2024).
Watson also received a mega contract: 5 year, $230 million fully guaranteed deal, and as part of this he will receive a $45 million signing bonus. The Browns have hit gold here. In my opinion, they have a massive upgrade at QB. They will struggle to make an impact in the 2022 season as I do feel Watson will get a suspension of some kind, probably 8 games. The Browns gave Watson a base salary of $1 million in the 2022 season to avoid loss of pay from the potential suspension.
Deshaun Watson – DLF ADP: QB10 – My ranking: QB8
Watson, now on the Browns, has moved up to QB 8 in my rankings, on the fringe of joining the top 7 in the top 2 tiers – but that could be next year’s rankings. The upgrade he has received going to the Browns is not as great as first thought. He has gone from Brandin Cooks, Nico Collins and Sexy Rexy (Rex Burkhead) to Amari Cooper, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. I think his improvements are in other places, like the offensive line and defence, but still is some kind of improvement.
Amari Cooper – DLF ADP: WR25 – My ranking: WR20
Cooper has got to be rubbing his hands together now after being traded from the Cowboys to the Browns 2 days ago. While preparing for a future alongside Baker Mayfield he later learned that he will now be having Watson passing him the ball. Cooper has been on a bit of a rollercoaster in my rankings this week. He started at WR22 but was then lowered to WR30 after being traded to the Browns. Now, after Watson heading there, he has moved to a season high of WR20.
Nick Chubb – DLF ADP: RB14 – My rankings: RB11
To me, Chubb does not change much. He has not moved and will do Chubb things, no matter who is giving him the ball. Even with Baker there last year, he managed 226 attempts for 1259 yards and 8 TDs. He will continue to do so, as long as they give him the ball.
Kareem Hunt – DLF ADP: RB35 – My ranking: RB31
Personally, I’m trying to find a way to move Hunt up more because he has the potential to be the biggest winner as a receiving back. He could benefit so much from Watson. His last season, where he played 16 games, he had 198 attempts for 841 yards and 6TDs but he also had 38 receptions for 304 yards and 5 TDs.
Donovan Peoples-Jones – DLF ADP: WR82 – My ranking: WR67
I appear to be a bit higher than consensus with Peoples-Jones, but I like him. He showed some flashes last year. In week 6 against the Cardinals Jones had himself a day, receiving 101 yards and 2 TDs. Having a quarterback like Watson throwing the ball can only mean arrows up for him.
Davis Mills – DLF ADP: QB23 – My ranking: QB25
Another big winner from the Watson trade is Mills who, at this moment in time, is the starter at the Texans. In my opinion, he deserves this opportunity after a valiant season last year – 2664 yards and 16 TDs. He was a prospect that went a bit under the radar in the NFL draft. Now, the Texans can build a team around Mills and hope for the best.
As a whole, I like the move to Browns and I think it’s arrows up for a lot of people. I’m excited to see what he can do there, we just have to wait until week 8 before we see what they can do!
