Waiver Wire Update- Week 1
It’s gameweek! It feels so good to type that. It’s been so long since we have watched meaningful football. Eight months is too long without football and too long without fantasy football. Gameweek also means Waiver Wire. I wrote an article last week that covers top Waiver Wire picks for Week One.
Well with new information, I wanted to give you a few more names you should jump on or consider. Remember, we use ESPN owned percentages.
Additional Waiver Wire Picks
Darrel Williams- RB Chiefs- 8.6% Owned vs HOU Week 1
This pickup is less a case of explosive Week One production and more adding a player early before others have a chance. Darrel Williams is going to be the number 2 behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire. So he becomes the primary handcuff. However, he should also have stand-alone value. Andy Reid has never committed to just one guy. Even when Kareem Hunt was putting up giant numbers in Kansas City, Damian Williams and Spencer Ware were relevant fantasy football Running Backs. Williams will probably be the most claimed player after Week One if he is relevant, so get ahead of the game.
Bryan Edwards- WR Raiders- 6.1% Owned @CAR Week 1
Edwards has been hyped all off-season. He has versatility, great hands and has earned rave camp reviews. I always take all of this with a pinch of salt. However, now Tyrell Williams has landed on IR, opportunity has now arrived for Bryan Edwards. The Raiders are a top 10 passing offense, and can support multiple fantasy relevant fantasy Wide Receivers. They also have a very difficult schedule and will have negative game script a lot. Especially early in the season. Therefore, if Edwards is involved heavily Week One, he will also get a lot of claims. Therefore, make sure you get ahead and grab him now.
Van Jefferson- WR Rams- 2.0% Owned Vs. DAL Week 1
This is purely off of what I am seeing. Van Jefferson is getting a lot of love in Hard Knocks and camp. He is dominating with the opportunities he is given and it looks like he has usurped Josh Reynolds in the depth chart. If that’s the case, given the Rams is a top 5 passing offense, having Jefferson could represent a real opportunity to get somebody on your roster before they pop. This one is a little bit of a risk, but if you have a Damian Harris, Ke’Shawn Vaughn or Tyrell Williams on your roster which is not going to return anything, then put a claim in for Jefferson.
Joshua Kelley- RB Chargers- 9.7% Owned @CIN Week 1
It looked very likely that Justin Jackson would be the man who would inherit a smaller version of the Melvin Gordon role vacated for the 2020 season. However, after seeing the camp reports and watching Joshua Kelley on Hard Knocks, it is clear to me that he is overtaken Jackson on the depth chart and has become the number 2 Running Back in LA. Kelley is going to get touches on the ground and he could potentially see goal-line carries. Cut Jackson or any other dead weight on your roster and add Kelley. If he scores in Week 1, his price will increase. He is free right now.
Denzel Mims- WR Jets- 11.5% Owned @BUF Week 1
Denzel Mims is currently Questionable for Week One. So this one is a slight risk. However, the Jets invested second round draft capital on Mims and will want him on the field. There is also a lack of competition for targets from Darnold. Crowder is locked at the slot guy and getting potentially a 30% target share.
However, after Crowder, there is no extremely healthy or talented Wide Receiver on the roster. Breshad Perriman cannot complete a training session right now due to a knee issue he has had since his rookie season. This means the only other receivers even worth mentioning are Chris Hogan (who has done nothing of fantasy relevance since he left the Patriots) and Braxton Berrios who did spike once or twice, but not a guy you want. Mims could earn a significant role in this offense, so grab him now for free.
Buy Low and Fine Tune Your Roster Now
This is the day you need to fine tune your roster. Whether you completed your draft three months ago, or just yesterday, you need to make sure you have a strong enough roster to cover potential injuries you might encounter Week One. However, you also want to make sure you have a couple of upside guys. Don’t be afraid to drop a plodder like LeSean McCoy or Carlos Hyde for one of these guys above. Hyde and McCoy won’t win you titles, especially in their current situations. Maybe one of these guys can.
